Term 1 Week 10 |  2 April 2025
College News

Term One — A Remarkable Start!

What a whirlwind Term One has been! We welcomed new students and families, celebrated achievements, and introduced exciting initiatives: PoPPATHWAYS, PoPACTIVE, PoPCONNECT, PoPENRICH. Our new gym at Middle and Senior Campus (MSC) opened, providing fantastic sporting opportunities, including our College Cross Country event.

Parent Voice: We Listen and Act

At Parent Connect Session 1, we engaged in meaningful discussions, ensuring parents are valued partners in our journey. A key takeaway? Junior Campus parents wanted more insight into Middle and Senior Campus offerings. We responded swiftly with a Learning Showcase, giving families firsthand experience. While notice was short, this event will be scheduled in advance for 2026.

Shaping the Future: The 5 C’s

In Parent Connect Session 2, we explored the 5 C’s — Christ-Centered, Cutting Edge, Connected in Community, Courage to Grow, and Change-Equipped — guiding Prince of Peace Lutheran College. These principles fuel our PoP PACE pillars, expanding opportunities for students. Your feedback was invaluable, and we are excited to keep growing together!

Upcoming Parent Connect Sessions

Mark your calendars! Join us via Teams for upcoming sessions:

  • Thursday, 15 May – 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM (Week 4, Term 2)
  • Thursday, 7 August – 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM (Week 4, Term 3)
  • Thursday, 30 October – 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM (Week 4, Term 4)

Welcoming and Farewelling Staff

We have wonderful, dedicated staff and after years of loving service we sadly farewell Bruce Prince (Teacher MSC) and Beatrice John (Learning & Enrichment Coordinator MSC). Having a baby is a beautiful gift and we wish Jess Schneider (Teacher JC) and Rechelle Sevillano (Teacher JC) so much joy as they take their maternity leave. We sadly say farewell to our Defence Force Mentor, Jarrod Murfett, who is moving to full time employment elsewhere. We will be recruiting a new Defence Force Mentor in the very near future. We welcome to our College, Sonja Kay (Reception – JC); and Kellie Shume (Student Services – MSC); Damon O’Keefe (Accountant – on contract), and Joseph Lopez (part-time IT).

Easter Blessings

This Easter, may you be surrounded by love, joy, and the hope that Christ’s resurrection brings. Just as Jesus gave His life for us in the greatest act of love, may you share kindness and compassion with those around you. On behalf of the College, I wish you all a safe and blessed Easter.

Yours in Christ,

Dr Susan Carter

Meet our P&F Executive Committee for 2025

Firstly, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our outgoing Executive Members; Andrea Rhind and Rebecca Hitchenson. Andrea with a distinguished tenure as President in 2021 and then Vice President since 2023 and Rebecca has served as P&F President since 2022. Both Andrea and Rebecca will continue to be vital members of the P&F Committee, with Andrea co-ordinating the School Book Club and Yatala Pie Drive and Bec generously volunteering her time around the JC. Thank you both for your ongoing commitment to our school community!

In 2025, the P&F Executive Committee aims to work with the College, parents, students and friends to:

  • Enhance Communication: Bridge the gap between parents, teachers, and the school administration to ensure everyone is informed and involved.
  • Promote Engagement: Encourage parents and friends to participate in school activities, events, and decision-making processes.
  • Support Fundraising Efforts: Organise and manage fundraising initiatives to provide additional resources and opportunities for our children.
  • Advocating for Students: Representing the interests and needs of students to ensure they receive the best possible education and support.
  • Building a Positive School Culture: Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all members feel valued and connected.

As parents, we all have skills and experience to offer, a voice to be heard, ideas to share and can contribute to enriching our children’s lives whilst at our school. If you want to get involved or have an idea to share, grab any of us for a chat or come to a P&F Committee Meeting.

Amie Butler
P&F President

Billy Govan — P&F Treasurer

“This year I look forward to discovering how the P&F’s funds will be used to benefit existing and future pupils.”

We are delighted to welcome Billy back as Treasurer for his 13th year! Billy, who has two sons at PoP, Will in Year 12 and Lachlan in Year 10, went to his first P&F Committee meeting in 2013 when his eldest commenced Prep. He put his hand up for the role of Treasurer and has been re-elected every year since. We are thrilled to benefit from Billy’s immense expertise, sound financial judgement and unwavering commitment to our school for another year. Thank you Billy! When he’s not volunteering his time or working full-time in IT, Billy and his family enjoy scrolling through Disney+ trying to all agree on a movie to watch, only to realise they don’t actually have the time to watch it.

Amber Dean — P&F Secretary

“This year I look forward to collaborating with both parents, staff and students to foster a strong sense of community and make a meaningful impact on our school.”

We are excited to welcome Amber back for her third year as Secretary. We are grateful for her organisation skills, warmth and positive energy. Thank you Amber!  With her daughter Alira in Year 8 and son Ollie in Year 5, you will often see Amber volunteering over both campuses. Whether coordinating the MSC Muffin Morning Teas or organising events like the PoP Picnic, Amber has always been willing to offer her time since her family joined the PoP community in 2013. She balances this with her full-time job as a User Experience Researcher in the Technology space. In her downtime, she loves to spend time with her family and friends, camping and travelling.

Michelle Faragher — P&F Vice-President

“As the incoming P&F Vice-President I look forward to getting more hands on in coordinating and delivering fun events for the kids whilst also raising money for our children’s learning experiences.”

New to the Executive role but certainly not a rookie in P&F involvement, we welcome Michelle to her first year as Vice-President. Michelle’s son Conor, in Year 4, started at PoP in Year 1 after the family moved from Victoria. Michelle skillfully balances her full-time role in Finance & Payroll with being a consistent presence around the Junior Campus. You’ll often find her volunteering for Ice Block Thursdays and manning various stalls throughout the year. She recently co-ordinated her first big event, the PoP Picnic, which was a great success. The funds raised will go towards some of the Year 6 Action Plans this year (stay tuned for more details). To unwind, her family loves to go to the beach and catch up with friends for long playdates.

Amie Butler — P&F President

As the incoming P&F President I look forward to enhancing communication between the College and the P&F community, increasing transparency about our fundraising efforts, and empowering parents and friends to get involved.

We have been a PoP family since commencing Prep in 2020. My daughter Amelia is now in Grade 5 and my son Max in Grade 2. I attended a P&F Committee Meeting last year after asking Amber how I could get involved. Since then, I have met an amazing group of parents, friends and staff who are truly committed to having a positive impact on our children and school community. On top of my full-time job as a Business Analyst in the Aged Care industry, I have found joy and fulfillment in getting involved with the P&F where I can. As a family we love to host long BBQs and pool parties with friends and family.

Introducing the Junior Campus Student Leadership Council (SLC)!

We are delighted to introduce a new initiative on the Junior Campus – the Student Leadership Council (SLC)! Designed to give students from Year 1 onwards a meaningful voice, the SLC will offer opportunities to contribute ideas, develop leadership skills, and collaborate with College Leadership to create a positive impact in our community.

We’ve begun assembling our inaugural council members, and it’s been inspiring to see the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness students are bringing to this important role. A heartfelt thank you to our Year 6 Student Leaders who led the preferential voting process with maturity and care – their leadership helped set a positive tone for this exciting new chapter.

Congratulations to Our First Student Leadership Council Members

On Monday, I had the pleasure of visiting classrooms to announce our newly elected class representatives. It was a time of celebration and reflection, as many students courageously stepped forward to be considered for leadership. We are incredibly proud of all who participated – nominating, preparing speeches, and putting themselves out there to lead.

A Little Leave, A Lot of Love

At the end of this term, we will be farewelling Mrs Schneider and Mrs Sevillano as they begin their maternity leave. We wish them both all the very best as they take this special time to focus on their growing families. We look forward to sharing in their joy and hearing updates in the months ahead.

Planning for replacement staffing has been well underway, and we are currently finalising arrangements. An announcement regarding staff replacements for Mrs Sevillano and Mrs Schnieder will be shared with the relevant classes and the wider community as soon as it is confirmed.

The Easter Tree – A Special Musical Performance

All families are warmly invited to join us for The Easter Tree – a special presentation that reflects on the hope, love and renewal that Easter brings.

This meaningful event will showcase performances by our school choirs, Junior Campus bands, student-led drama and narration, along with contributions from staff representatives.

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing Mr Reason and his dedicated team of helpers for bringing this story to life through music, movement and message. Their creativity and commitment have helped our students prepare something truly memorable.

Performance Times – Prince of Peace Church:
📅 Thursday 3 April at 5:00 PM
📅 Friday 4 April at 1:40 PM

We look forward to sharing this special Easter celebration with you.

A Season of Gratitude and Hope

As Term 1 comes to a close, we pause to reflect on the many blessings that have enriched our community—growth in learning, the strengthening of relationships, and the shared sense of purpose that defines life at Prince of Peace.

Despite the challenges brought by Cyclone Alfie, including the wind, rain, fallen trees that disrupted our routines, we witnessed resilience, joy, and connection—most recently in the laughter and delight of our PoP Picnic adventures. These moments remind us that joy can shine through even the stormiest days.

As we now step into the holiday break and turn our hearts toward the Easter season, may you find peace and renewed hope. May this time offer space to reflect on the promise of new life and the deep love that surrounds us all.

Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed and joyful Easter.

Be Blessed

TRP and Brisbane Broncos Visit

Last week, our students participated in a special event as part of The Resilience Project. We were honoured to host Alex Glenn and Tamika Upton, ambassadors from the Brisbane Broncos, who shared their experiences and highlighted the importance of wellbeing and GEM (Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness) practices in professional sports.

The athletes connected with our students through personal stories and led them in engaging activities that reinforced these valuable life skills. This event was a great opportunity for our students to learn from inspiring role models and gain practical tools to enhance their emotional intelligence and overall wellbeing. There was even an opportunity to meet and greet Alex and Tamika after the presentation.

We sincerely thank TRP and the Brisbane Broncos for sharing this valuable message with our community.

College Uniform Guidelines

As I have been out and about on campus, it has come to my attention that several students are wearing incorrect school shoes. We understand that as the year progresses, students will damage or grow out of their shoes.  As we approach the upcoming holiday break, it’s a great opportunity to ensure your child has the correct school shoes for the start of Term 2.

We kindly remind all parents to check that their children have the appropriate school shoes, as this is an important part of our College uniform expectations and helps maintain a safe and consistent learning environment.

If you have any questions or concerns about the school shoe policy, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your support in this matter and look forward to seeing everyone back in Term 2 with the correct attire.

Please note that if a child requires special shoes for a medical condition, this is to be put in writing to Coreta Lennon, and this information will be stored in SEQTA.

PoP ENRICH at the Junior Campus

What a Term of learning it has been at the Junior Campus! It is a time to take stock reflect and continue to grow as a community of learners. When asking students what they have loved about their learning this Term, the main answer has been their teachers. Also themes of learning that was ‘fun’ and ‘engaging’ have unsurprisingly been shared. We were curious about what makes their learning fun and engaging and students faces light up when asked this. Having choice, multi-media presentations and working in groups were a few responses. Ask your students tonight what does fun and engaging learning look like? This is how we at PoP strive to engage and meet all of our learners where they are at. We have some Enrichment opportunities coming up in Term two that we are excited about as they put our students on a State and National platform where we know that they will shine. For example:

Readers’ Cup

Readers’ Cup is a competition run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia for selected readers in grade five and six. The program challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively and continue developing a love of reading. PoPs’ teams will compete at a regional and state level and meet other students with an equal passion for books. We have increased PoP’s to two teams this year, this is the maximum allowed and a testament to our teaching and student achievement in Reading.

Maths Olympiad

Maths Olympiad is a prestigious national competition for selected students in years two to six that utilises and builds competence in Mathematical problem solving and higher order thinking skills. Focused instruction pertaining to collaborative problem solving and efficient group dynamics develops and builds high performing teams able to navigate challenges and effectively communicate learning.

Places for Maths Olympiad are chosen from student performance in PAT Maths assessments conducted early Term one.

Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge

Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge is a fun and engaging computational thinking challenge for students in Years 3 to 6 run on an international level. Students work in groups of four and compete nationally against other schools and are recognised for their mathematical understanding. This is a great opportunity for our students to be challenged in their thinking around problem solving, algorithm design, pattern recognition, pattern generalisation and abstraction.

All parents in years 3 to 6 have the option of allowing students to participate in Berbras and practice will be Tuesday and Thursday during one of the break times.

We are looking forward to offering opportunities to enrich our students in extracurricular activities in Term 2 at PoP!

Christ’s transformational love for us

There are many Easter symbols that speak of Christ’s transformation love for us that we can reflect upon as families this Easter. These symbols speak to the stages of Jesus’ entering into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the Passover meal with Jesus and his disciples to his death on the Cross and Resurrection.

We invite you to reflect on the symbols below:

Palm Branches: At the start of Holy Week, we celebrate Palm Sunday, the day that Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem on a donkey. Here Jesus was greeted by people laying down branches and their coats welcoming him as their Hosanna. Matthew 21:1-11. The palm branches symbolise the path that was laid before Jesus and sometimes can be made in crosses. Follow this video to make your own palm leaf cross »

Bread and Wine: The Passover meal was shared on Maundy Thursday with Jesus and his disciples, and this is where Jesus introduced the sacrament of holy communion. Luke 22:20

Crown of thorns: Jesus was given a crown of thorns after he was hit by Roman soldiers, and he was mocked for being the King of the Jews. Mark 15:16-20

The Cross: The cross reminds us of the profound truth, thousands of years of prophecy and God’s calling for Jesus which saw his excruciating death. Most importantly we see God’s amazing love for us through Jesus’ sacrifice. Mark 15:24

The empty tomb: The tomb was found empty with the stone rolled away and Jesus was nowhere to be found because he had risen from the dead. John 20:1-2

Easter lilies: The white Easter lilies symbolises rebirth, new beginnings, and hope and is mentioned in the bible often. It is mostly connected to the resurrection of Jesus and bloom at Easter time.  Luke 12:27

Easter Eggs: Eggs represent new life and rebirth. The chocolate egg represents the tomb in which Jesus laid, but once he rose again and the tomb was empty and hollow. When an egg is broken and open, it symbolises new life that is given through Jesus’ resurrection. The hope of Jesus’ love for us.

Each of these symbols carries a deep and rich part of the transformational love of Jesus’ great sacrifice for us which graciously gives eternal life with him in heaven. May you find time in this Holy Week and Easter to be present in each moment of Jesus’ amazing story of love, hope, and new life.

Year 9 Mt Binga Camp – Information Evening

Year 9 Mt Binga Camp Dates: 15 July – 2 August 2025

On Wednesday evening, 23 April, we welcome you and your Year 9 student to attend the Year 9 Binga Information Evening in the Auditorium to learn more about this exciting rite of passage for our Year 9 cohort.

NAPLAN Testing

Thank you to our Year 7 and 9 students, staff, and parents as we worked together through the NAPLAN testing period. These tests give us information about our students’ literacy and numeracy capabilities and is one piece of data that we have to compare with school-based assessment and internal testing.

These test results also guide teachers with development for literacy and numeracy programs and we look forward to mapping the longitudinal data to form targeted improvements and strategies in 2025 and beyond.

Parent Teacher Student Conversations

Thank you to our parents and students in making time in your busy schedules to meet with teachers at Parent Teacher Student Conversations on Thursday 27 March and Wednesday 2 April. These connections are so crucial with students being present at these times as the agency for change and improvement will be strengthened when all voices are shared.

Continuous Feedback (Progressive Reporting) Term 1 2025

Twice a term for each subject students and parents will receive feedback on SEQTA on assessment for learning in real time. We call this Continuous Feedback (progressive reporting). As parents you will gain a notification through SEQTA that feedback has been updated, and you can check the feedback teachers have given.

This is our mode of reporting for Term 1. An end of Semester 1 report will be issued towards the end of Term 2 that will report on overall grades for the semester, work habits for success and a pastoral care teacher comment.

At any time you wish to communicate with teachers about your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact individual subject teachers.

Middle and Senior Campus Showcase and Open Morning

We were delighted to welcome Junior Campus Families and Students and prospective families to the Middle and Senior Campus in Week 9 to showcase our personalised pathways in the Arts, Science, Maths, Health and Physical Education and Technology.

Year 7/8 Fibre Technology & Design & Technology: Growing a Sustainable Future

Students in Year 7 and 8 Fibre Technology and Design & Technology are rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty—literally! As part of their latest project, they are exploring the benefits of kitchen gardens, where the PoP school community can grow fresh produce right on campus. This initiative is not just about gardening; it’s about sustainability, innovation, and making a real impact on the environment.

A kitchen garden offers many advantages over store-bought produce, which is often transported long distances, stored for weeks, and grown using resource-intensive methods. By growing their own food, students can reduce their environmental footprint, promote healthier eating habits, and learn valuable life skills.

Throughout the course, students will assess current gardening practices, identify areas for improvement, and design their own sustainable kitchen gardens. They will also investigate modern irrigation methods, renewable energy applications, and the environmental impact of traditional farming. Armed with this knowledge, they will develop innovative solutions, such as solar-powered hydroponic systems, to create efficient, eco-friendly food-growing techniques.

The project emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, providing students with hands-on experience using engineering principles and digital technologies. They will build working prototypes and present their designs to peers, inspiring others to start their own kitchen gardens at home or within the community.

By the end of the course, students will have developed functional prototypes for sustainable irrigation, demonstrating their ability to design, test, and refine solutions for real-world agricultural challenges. This experience not only supports STEM education and sustainability goals, but also prepares students for future careers in engineering, environmental science, and agricultural innovation.

Stay tuned for student presentations and see how they’re growing a greener future—one garden at a time! 🌱💡

Parent, Student, Teacher Conference — Thank You

It was wonderful to see so many of you during the first Parent, Student, Teacher Conference session last week. The time to engage collaboratively in a conference provides rich and meaningful communication. These conversations occur at an important midway point in our academic reporting cycle. They are positioned so that the learning growth that has occurred over the previous few weeks can be discussed and changes that need to be identified can be highlighted.

I thank all those who were able to make last week’s Conference and I look forward to meeting those in the next. If you were unable to make the two Conference sessions please do not hesitate to direct connect with teachers.

Revision Strategies

Following on from our sessions with Elevate, I am providing some specific tips for supporting your child when they have an exam. These strategies were provided to Senior students in their Elevate sessions.

Make a realistic revision schedule: Work out how much you need to do and the time you have to do it in, then break it down into manageable chunks. Aim to undertake revision each day and mix up your subjects so you do not get bored.

Find a revision style that suits you: Studying alone in a quiet room suits some people, but not everyone likes working in silence. Try playing music quietly in the background or revising with a friend. Organise a study peer group and work together to support each other.

Customise your notes to make them more personal: Experiment with colour coding, notes on postcards, diagrams or whatever helps you learn your topic.

Make sure you understand everything: If you come across something you do not understand, try to find a new source of information that will help you understand it. Just memorising it will not help you in your exam. Do not be afraid to ask your teacher or a friend for help if you need it.

Look at past exam papers: It means you can familiarise yourself with the layout and type of questions you will be asked. Practise completing exam papers in the set time limit to improve your exam technique.

Take regular short breaks: Studying for hours and hours will only make you tired and ruin your concentration, which may make you even more anxious.

Reward yourself: For example, you could listen to music, spend time with friends or watch a good movie once you have finished your revision session.

Do something physical: When you are not revising, use your spare time to get away from your revision or learning and do something active, like going for a walk or doing some stretching. Exercise is good for taking your mind off stress and keeping you positive, and it will help you sleep better.

Ask for help: If you’re feeling stressed, it’s important to talk to someone you trust, such as a family member, teacher or a friend. Lots of people find exams difficult to deal with, so do not be embarrassed to ask for support.

How to handle exam days

Be prepared: Start the day with a good breakfast and give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Remember to take everything you need, including pencils, pens, and a calculator. A bottle of water and some tissues are also useful.

Try a breathing exercise if you are feeling overwhelmed: Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold it for 2 counts, and breathe out for 7 counts. Repeating this can help you feel calm.

Peace to you,

Wendy Bowen

Special Acknowledgment

A few weeks ago, Teddy Weeks represented Arana Little Athletics Club at the McDonalds State Combined Event Championships.

The event was held at Queensland State Athletics Centre with entrants from 55 Clubs around Queensland. Teddy competed in the Outdoor Pentathlon in under 12 Boys. 26 boys entered that had qualified for this combined event, challenging them across multiple events to test their all-around skills. This years under 12 Boys Outdoor Pentathlon comprised of 80m Hurdles, Shot Put, 100m Sprint, High Jump and 800m.

Teddy excels at Javelin, Discus and Shot Put and has had a strong focus on training these events as well as converting to Fosbury Flop technique for High Jump which is his favourite event. Regardless of the outcome Teddys entered the competition excited to call up the experience of competing at this level and at a world class venue but most of all proud of what he had already achieved. He set the goal to do his best in each event and ensure he completed all the individual events on the day so that he could achieve a ranking in the overall pentathlon. With high winds present on the day of competition Teddy did not set any PB’s, however he did achieve his goal and completed the pentathlon and got a ranking. Teddy was ranked 17th overall in under 12 boys McDonalds State Combined Event Championships. Not a bad result for his first one. Well done Teddy!

Exciting Music Updates at Prince of Peace Junior Campus

Prince of Peace is happy to share some exciting developments for our music program. Some fantastic changes are on the horizon that will pave the way for greater access to guided Extra-Curricular music activities. We’re forging a new partnership with music tutors who are eager to share their expertise with our talented students. This collaboration promises to bring more hands-on music experiences in the future, enriching our students’ learning in fresh and inspiring ways. While things might look a little different, we’re working out the details and will keep our families updated as we prepare to launch this fully at the start of Term 2. Stay tuned for more!

In other news, we bid a fond farewell to our wonderful vocal tutor, Steph McLean, who is moving on to a new direction for her career. Steph’s kindness, dedication, and exceptional teaching have been a true blessing to our school community, and she will be deeply missed. We wish her all the best in her next chapter!

Lastly, as we prepare for our musical, The Easter Tree I would like to express my gratitude. This production has been a labour of love, and it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible hard work and generosity of our amazing staff and students. Their creativity and commitment are shining through, and we can’t wait to share this performance with you all!
