Term 3 Week 2 | 17 July 2024
College News

Welcome Back

After a slightly longer break for our students recently, welcome back to everyone.  I hope families were able to spend some enjoyable, quality time with one another and certainly there have been some great stories from students about their adventures during the semester break.  We have headed straight into a busy few months of exciting events, with our Middle School students receiving their academic awards last week, and our Senior Students doing so next week.  Junior School are looking forward to Spanish Day this coming Friday, and our first group of Year 9 students have just headed off to their four-week camp at Mt Binga.  We have a few staff absent this term on different types of leave, and we’d love to welcome Blake Paskins (covering Mary Bergmeier on Maternity Leave), Oliver Bartlett (covering Natasha Cochrane on Long Service Leave), Terry Austin (Design Tech teacher), Lavina Merlin (working in compliance in Business Office), and Isabella Philpot (Junior School LEO).  We have also, just recently farewelled Abby Morse and Marissa Gibb who have been wonderful in their roles as Junior School LEOs and will farewell one of our Facilities team, Scott Miers this week. We thank them all for their service to our College and students and wish them all the best in the new roles and careers they have headed off to.

Tuckshop Update

Last term we were very excited to announce that we were in the process of planning the addition of a Canteen, or Tuckshop, or Café to the Middle & Senior Campus – we’ll let students get onto the naming process.  We are now very close to ironing out all the little complications to making this a reality, now at the point of getting relatively realistic timelines in place.  Fitting with our strategic direction to improve spaces and resources, our goal at this stage is to see it on site and ready to become operational by September 30 – the beginning of Term Four!  Of course, there are possibly some smaller, unknown hurdles that might appear, but we are excited to now be able to see the reality of a tentative operational date on the horizon.  And, yes, in the meantime we will have students put forward suggestions for the all-important name.  Not yet on a commitment timeline, we have also begun early research into the possibility of upgrading the Tuckshop facility on the Junior Campus to be a full working kitchen.  Given the age of the building and the position of the Tuckshop space (downstairs), this could require some slow and careful planning to ensure the result caters for longer term needs, but hopefully there is a possibility for this, also, in the not-too-distant future.

Absentees via SEQTA

A reminder that all absentee notifications are now being sent to the College directly through the SEQTA Engage app.  This process is very simple and saves our wonderful office staff a significant amount of processing time every day, as the data is placed directly into the system, rather than having to be transferred from multiple emails that are generated through the old Prince of Peace App system.  Please be aware, once you press submit, a small text box appears notifying you that the submission has gone in, and the form will then reset.  If you have any questions, or difficulties with the Engage App, please just contact Administration and we will look to support you getting your phone to behave.

Every blessing for the week ahead.

BillyLids Therapy

BillyLids Therapy is run by a PoP Mum

At BillyLids Therapy, we know that speech pathology and occupational therapy for kids isn’t one-size-fits-all. With play-based therapy at the heart of what we do, we use engaging games, toys, books, and other interactive resources, to implement evidence-based therapeutic techniques that support your child’s development. Most importantly, we take the time to get to know your child’s interests, needs and how their brain works so we can tailor each session to suit them.

BillyLids Therapy specialises in supporting children under 10 years old, in the areas of:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Pathology

Occupational Therapy

The everyday childhood joys of living, growing and playing are important for your child. But for some children, they aren’t easy or fun. BillyLids occupational therapists support these children by making the tasks of daily life easier. Their help children with gross motor skills, fine motor skills, emotional regulation, social skills and more.

Speech Pathology

Every voice deserves to be heard. But for many children, making themselves heard and understood can be challenging. Our speech pathologists specialise in working with children using engaging activities to help your child learn new words, improve their articulation, and understand different aspects of language. In particular, we support children to overcome communication challenges and learn new techniques, including speech difficulties, expressive language challenges, the comprehension of non-verbal cues like gestures, facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, and more.

We can come to you

When your child is struggling, it is often helpful to see them in their own environment, which is why the speech pathologists at BillyLids Therapy love to get out and visit children away from the clinic in their home or conduct sessions at childcare, kindy or school.

Everyone is welcome

Whether your child has a specific developmental goal to meet or they’re living with complex disabilities, we have experienced and caring therapists ready to support, you, your child and your family.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Prince of Peace is participating in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge from now until 23 August 2024. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.

Children and students from Prep to Year 9 who read the allocated number of books for their reading level and therefore complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised by receiving a certificate of achievement signed by the Premier.

  • Prep to Year 2—read or experience 20 books
  • Years 3 to 4—read 20 books
  • Years 5 to 9—read 15 books

Reading opens up a world of educational opportunities for young people and provides the foundation for lifelong learning.

Junior Campus News

Welcome to the second half of the year!

Welcome back to the second half of the year, and a special welcome to our new families and students who have begun with us this term.  I hope that you will feel connected and embraced by this wonderful community.

Relocated Spaces – Library, Year 3FB and Spanish Room

Late in Term 2, our Year 6 cohort relocated to the new Area 6 block of classrooms and during the holiday break we have been able to relocate the library resources to above the Year 5 classrooms.  This area has been a buzz of activity with children engaging this space for borrowing books, learning, playing games, reading, Lego building, Year 6 Leadership Activities and use of the Tech Lab.  I encourage you ask your child for a tour of the space.

(insert 4 images of children playing in the library)

Our Year 3FB class also moved rooms to be near the other Year 3 class and this week will see Mrs Arribas move into a classroom near the Year 5 classes as a home base for Language – Spanish lessons.  Mrs Arribas has been an absolute legend in moving around the campus to teach and I’m sure will look forward to having a resourced Language room to support student learning.

Parent Teacher and Student Conversations

It has been great to see many students and parents engaging in these conversation opportunities.  Involving students in these conversations aims to promote:

  • Student ownership and engagement in learning
  • Communication and collaboration skills
  • Authentic understanding of assessment and next steps
  • Parent involvement and understanding
  • Student agency and leadership development
  • An increase in motivation and accountability
  • Celebration and recognition

We know that many of these skills for students are not easy and take time and practice to develop.  It’s OK to reflect and acknowledge that they may not be fully developed YET!

As I was out talking to families last Thursday, I was heartened by comments like:

“My child’s is getting better at talking about their learning, the positive bits and the bits they need to work on.”

I encourage you to celebrate the progress that your child has made in articulating their understanding of the learning journey and developing the next steps.  It is so good to celebrate growth in all it’s forms.

To understand more about why we encourage Parent Teacher Student Conversation, and what makes Prince of Peace different, please visit the ‘Discover Us’ section of our website »

If you missed the opportunity to make a time with your child to talk about learning with the class teacher or one of the Specialist teachers, you are always welcome to contact staff via SEQTA to arrange a catch up.

Celebrating in Term 3! It’s going to Fun!

Term 3 promises to bring many opportunities to connect and celebrate.  I would encourage you to mark dates in your calendar.  It’s going to fun but extremely busy!

  • Junior Campus Spanish Day – Friday 19 July
  • Winter Carnival – Saturday 27 July on the Middle and Senior Campus
  • Grandparents and Special Friends – Friday 16 August
  • Junior Campus Book Week Celebrations – Tuesday 20 August
  • Junior Campus Father’s Day Event – Wednesday 28 August 7:45 – 9:30am

I’m looking forward to Spanish Day this coming Friday. Dressing like a pilgrim – probably a modern-day traveler and having the time to explore and embrace Spanish culture.

Thank you PoP community for all you do.

Head of Campus – Junior

Welcome to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break, filled with family time, fun activities, and perhaps even a bit of adventure. As we embark on this new term, we are excited about the opportunities and experiences that lie ahead.

Communication between home and school is vital for student success, and we value your partnership.

Please keep an eye on our newsletters, website, and social media channels for updates and important information. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or our school administration.

This week, our students are focusing on gratitude. Some benefits of practicing gratitude are:

  • After 21 days, you start to scan the world for positives.
  • After 42 days you become:
    • More optimistic, energised & focused.
    • Less likely to get sick.
    • You will sleep better.
    • Anxiety and depression decrease.

A few quick and simple ways to practise being grateful are:

  • Journaling; each night write down 3 things that went well for you that day or purchase a gratitude journal with gratitude prompts.
  • Write a gratitude letter to someone special, telling them why you are grateful they are in your life.
  • Have a family discussion on the way home from school or around the dinner table about the things that went well that day or made you smile.

Don’t forget to jump online and access the TRP Parent Hub for more information https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

The Resilience Project App

This app is a daily well-being journal where you can identify and track your emotions, record moments of gratitude, and practice mindfulness.

The aim is to develop emotional literacy, engage with the positive things in life, and be actively present.

The app is suitable for all ages, and includes the option to create profiles for each member of the family. Download via iTunes or Google Play.

Parking and Drop-Off Reminder

Please be mindful that our Hardcourt (Green Room car park) area is a staff-only parking area.

This area is not designed for parent parking or dropping off students.

Please remember to drop off at the Kiss and Go Areas at the front Administration Area and down at the Shed where there is staff supervision.

Exciting News!

Last Friday, our Buddy Bench was installed on the Junior Campus. When Year 6 student Clara saw a need to ensure that all students felt included at break times, she researched and found that a Buddy Bench is a visual reminder to encourage students to include others.

After taking her proposal to the Arana Hills Leagues Club, they kindly donated funds to purchase and install a Buddy Bench on our campus. We thank them for their generosity and support of our young people.

Clara and her team will continue to educate our students about being inclusive and using the bench.

As we begin Term 3, let’s work together to create a positive, nurturing, and inspiring environment where every child can thrive. We look forward to another term of growth, learning, and success.

Blessings,

Coreta Lennon
Deputy Head of Campus – Junior

Careers @ PoP

My PoP Pathway

It may be worth considering university subjects that students can undertake while completing Year 11 and 12. Each university will have their own name and criteria for their programs. From ‘Headstart’, ‘Start’ through to ‘Enriched Studies Programs’.

Name aside, all it means is that eligible students will have the opportunity to apply for and complete a university subject while completing their Senior studies at school.

Depending on the institution, classes can be online or on campus. The results for the subject will accrue QCE points, but do not go towards a student’s ATAR. In some instances, successful completion of these subjects can take time off the related degree.

If you are interested, I would encourage you to look at the individual university websites and they will indicate what the subjects and criteria are for eligibility.

Please reach out to me if you have any further questions regarding university programs.

Interhouse Cross Country Carnival

Unfortunately, our Interhouse Cross Country Carnival was cancelled back in Term 1 due to poor weather. It had always been our intention to hold a modified carnival on site in Term 2 to provide students the opportunity to participate.  The winning house was Fraser with 356 points.  Followed by Laver on 317, Bradman on 292, and Jackson on 286.

Students were presented their age champion medals and the House Shield during our sports assembly at the end of Term 2. Well done to all!

BOSL Basketball

Last term I had the pleasure of coaching my Year 11 and 12 BOSL boys basketball team. They had great success winning most of their games to take us to the 3rd and 4th place-off match. The boys gave the other team a real challenge on the court but sadly suffered a very close loss.

They all showed great team work and leadership skills throughout the season. I can happily say I’m proud with the way they performed. We hope to have a great season again next year with some fresh faces. Congratulation to Aidan Gardso on being named in the All Star Team.   Report by Ned Dyer.
