40 Years in Community
Forty years ago, this very first typed and photocopied edition of Popcorn (ok, let’s just pretend) would have been handed out to the families of approximately 70 students seven days into the history of Prince of Peace. Just a week earlier, the school had opened on Rogers Parade West on the site of a recently purchased lettuce farm, with three classes beginning on that first day. On that very first morning of PoP operating, the delivery of classroom furniture had not yet taken place due to a truck driver deciding to head off early for a spot of camping over the long weekend. He had the only set of truck keys. And, of course, no mobile phone or any other way of being contacted. So, after the smallest amount of panic over the weekend, the truck arrived incredibly early on day one and a mad flurry of activity ensued to unload the truck and set up classrooms for the arrival of students! Just a few months earlier, the decision of the approving bodies for the registration of the school sat on a knife-edge and came down to one final meeting. In between those two events, the pause of government funding for construction of the first building due to an election meant there was a chance classrooms wouldn’t be completed in time. I love these stories, because all schools have this, or a very similar but unique, set of stories in their genesis and key points in their lives. There are undoubtedly thousands of other unique, quirky, sad, heartfelt, uplifting, funny or fascinating stories that make up the history of Prince of Peace as we arrive in 2024 at the birthday of 40 years of being in community together through the school – now College. All schools tend to have this kind of story somewhere in their history because starting schools is hard. Incredibly hard, and communities know this. But, this community was driven to build a school for the young people of the local area that was centred around the gospel and creating a Christ-centred environment for not just learning, but growth and nurture of their children. Later, (again, as with many of our fellow Lutheran schools) this was expanded to reach Year 12. So, as we delve into 2024, we take the opportunity to look back and reflect on the many stories and rich history that have led us to be in this wonderful community today, and forwards to the nurture and growth of our College as it continues to share Christ’s love and message of hope and grace in the world.
Welcome Back
Welcome back to our existing families, and a very warm welcome, also, to our new families who have commenced with us this year. It has been a wonderful start to the year, and a joy for our staff, hearing what students got up to over the break. For me personally, it is great to be back from my long service and sabbatical leave. As a family, we did successfully walk just over 200km of the Camino in Spain over several weeks and while there are so many highlights from that time, it certainly also gave my kids an opportunity to learn and practise resilience!
I take this opportunity to again thank Grace Lutheran College for “loaning” Mr Warren Irvine to us for Term four as Acting Head of College, holding the fort in my absence. Thank you also to the College Leadership Team for their support of Warren during his time supporting us. How blessed are we to be part of a wider community of support and family within Lutheran education, that extend to us these opportunities.

2023 – Year 12
We are so very proud of our graduating class of 2023. 13 years of education, with several years of additional challenge through their final years of education through the pandemic. Their results and achievements demonstrate resilience and plenty of hard work in pursuing their God-given potential as they head out to the next chapter of their lives. From the data we received we can share the following wonderful achievements:
- 97 % of Prince of Peace students received their QCE.
- Our College Dux for 2023 is Georgia Glentworth who received an excellent ATAR of 94.6.
- Our Proxime Accessit to the Dux is Patrick Austin who achieved an excellent ATAR of 94.1
- 29% of students received an ATAR of 90 or above and 60% of students received an ATAR of 80 or above.
- One of our students received 100% in a General Subject and 98 % in an Extension Subject.
- Three of our students received A grade results in every one of their General Subjects.
- 35 % of our students scored 90 or above out of 100 in their General Subject results.
- 29% of the Class of 2023 received one or more Vocational Qualifications alongside their QCE.
- Five students have completed their school-based traineeships (SAT).
- 29% of the Class of 2023 also received early entry offers to University courses.
We continue to pray for these young people and wish them every blessing as they begin the next phase of life and learning this year.

Strategic Directions
In 2024, as the College continues to work through our Strategic Directions and looking ahead, some of Senior Leadership team are engaging in a discovery process of contemporary pedagogy throughout the first term. We will be visiting a range of other Lutheran Colleges and schools who have recenlty gone through a similar process, collectively sharing and learning from different ideas and methods as we move forward in continuing to shape and enhance our pedagocial approach for the future.

PoP Welcome Picnic
All PoP Kindy to Year 12 families are invited to our first 40th Anniversary event for 2024 – our College Welcome Picnic.
Join us on the Junior Campus Oval for games, a free sausage sizzle for students, an inflatable slide and food trucks. BYO rug/food/chair and embrace the first of many celebrations.
Calling all Volunteers…. PoP’s Winter Carnival is coming!
What better way to celebrate the College’s 40th birthday than with a College fete! After a 5 year hiatus (thank-you COVID), the College’s next fete will be held on Saturday 27 July 2024 from 11am – 6:00pm. It also has a new name – ‘PoP’s Winter Carnival’. So please put it in your diary now!
The Winter Carnival will include rides for all ages, a petting zoo, side show alley, games, class stalls, food trucks, entertainment from students and staff, music, and of course, birthday fireworks. For a day like this to succeed, we need our wonderful PoP community to support this venture. In other words, we need you!
How can you help?
- Run a stall
Some stalls are just too popular to allocate to a year level. These stalls are perfect for volunteers with great organisational skills or those who can pull together a small group of friends to share the responsibility. We are seeking volunteers to oversee these stalls:- Bake Stall

- Silent Auction
- Participate in your class stall
Over the coming weeks, class stalls will be allocated to year levels. Parents & older students will be asked to donate 30 mins to their child’s class stall. An online rostering system will go live later this term so parents and students can lock in their volunteering schedule in advance. - Donate goods or services
During Term 2, we will ask families to donate ingredients for our cake, lolly and drinks stalls. - Help prepare!
Both the Bake Stall and the Lolly Stall will need volunteers to help sort donated ingredients closer to the date, and redistribute them if necessary.

Throughout the year the College will communicate with you using a range of methods including SEQTA, phone, letter, email or in person. These avenues will be used for important, urgent or time-sensitive information.

SEQTA is the Learning Management System that we utilise as the primary form of communication between the College and parents/caregivers.
Teachers and Admin staff use this platform to send direct messages and notices, notify of assessments, results, student timetables and reports. Parents/caregivers can liaise with teachers; all correspondence is archived within the system.

Our Facebook and Instagram pages are constantly updated with posts, photos, notices and videos covering the buzz of activity happening around the College. Please ‘Follow’ our pages, and be sure to like, comment and share posts with the rest of our fabulous PoP community.

Welcome Back – It Is So Good to See You!
Shiny new shoes, slightly oversized uniforms, and smiling faces can only mean on thing… school is back!
Our vibrant Junior Campus has come to life with the wonderful hum of learning, gathering with friends, playful squeals and happy handball-banter. While the staff were super busy leading up to the first day, it is never quite the same until the children arrive. Our community comes to life as we share stories and take further steps in the learning journey.
This year, as we celebrate our 40th Year of Living in Community as Prince of Peace Lutheran College, I encourage you to embrace community, listen to stories and look forward to the year ahead.
Parent Information Sessions – Thursday 1 Feb
We look forward to welcoming you to the Junior Campus on Thursday. This is an opportunity to meet our teachers and understand more about what happens within each year level. We invite you to join us in The Shed for some social time in between sessions. Teaching Teams will run the session in a year level classroom with the exception of Year 2. The format is as follows:
5:00 – 5:30PM — Year 1- 6 New College Families in Area 6
5:30 – 6:15PM — Prep to Year 3 sessions (Year 2 in Area 6)
6:00 – 7:00PM — Social Time in The Shed
6:45 – 7:30PM — Years 4 to Year 6 sessions
Junior Campus Swimming Lessons
Students in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 begin their swimming lessons next week while students in Prep, Year 1 and 2 will participate in swimming lessons in Term 4.

Junior Campus Traffic, Parking and Pick-up – Outstanding start to the Year!
A huge thank you for the safe and smooth way that people have been accessing the Junior Campus at pick up and drop off. As everyone settles into school routines, I want to commend our families on this important aspect of school life; driving slowly through the campus, parking respectfully in the surrounding streets and using the crossing safely all make a difference.
As we head to the new school year, our 40th year, I want to encourage you with words of hope, optimism and community living. The book of Thessalonians speaks so vividly about encouragement and I’ll leave you with a small section of Thessalonians 1:13-15 The Message version, knowing that it is Christ who strengthens us in all we do.
Gently encourage the stragglers, and reach out for the exhausted, pulling them to their feet. Be patient with each person, attentive to individual needs. And be careful that when you get on each other’s nerves you don’t snap at each other. Look for the best in each other, and always do your best to bring it out.

Celebrating 40 Years of Living in Community
As we embark on a new school year, we extend a warm welcome to each one of you! Whether you’re returning to the College or joining us for the first time, your presence enriches our vibrant community. This year, we are celebrating our 40th birthday and placing a special emphasis on “Living in Community” – a theme that reflects our commitment to fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, connected, and engaged.
Our College is more than just a place of learning; it’s a dynamic community where diverse backgrounds, ideas, and dreams converge. We encourage everyone to actively participate in creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. This means respecting differences, offering a helping hand, and understanding that each person’s journey is unique.
To enhance our sense of community, we have planned a variety of activities and events throughout the year. From our Winter Carnival and sports events to volunteer opportunities and meet and greets, there’s something for everyone. Participating in these events is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and make lasting memories.
Another important aspect of living in community is ensuring that everyone’s wellbeing is of top priority. At Prince of Peace, we offer a range of resources to support your physical, mental and emotional health. We also encourage an open dialogue about wellbeing, promoting a culture where it’s okay to seek help and support from one another. This year we have partnered with the Resilience Project to support your child’s mental health. This program is designed to support students in developing their emotional literacy.
The research is clear; the more positive emotion you experience, the more resilient you will be. The Bible also tells us ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 4:6

Bebras Challenge: Nurturing Computational Thinking
We are proud to announce the continuation of the Bebras Challenge, an international initiative designed to promote computational thinking among students. The Bebras Challenge encourages problem-solving and logical reasoning skills, preparing our students for the challenges of the digital age. This program is open to students of all levels and promises to be an engaging and intellectually stimulating experience.
ICAS Assessments: Unleashing Academic Excellence
Our commitment to academic excellence remains unwavering, and this year, we will once again participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). These assessments provide a platform for students to showcase their skills in various subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, and Digital Technologies. Participation in ICAS not only fosters healthy competition, but also helps students to benchmark their abilities on an international scale.
Maths Olympiad: Celebrating Mathematical Prowess
For our Years 5 and 6 math enthusiasts, we are excited to be offering the Maths Olympiad program for the first time. This challenging competition allows students to delve deeper into the world of mathematics, honing their problem-solving skills and fostering a love for the subject. We believe that participation in the Maths Olympiad not only enriches students’ mathematical knowledge but also instils a sense of confidence and accomplishment.
eSport@PoP: A New Dimension of Teamwork and Strategy
In keeping with the evolving interests of our students, we are continuing to build on the eSports@PoP extracurricular option through FUSE Cup. eSports not only promotes teamwork and strategic thinking but also provides an avenue for students to engage in friendly competition in the digital realm. This program aims to balance the academic and recreational aspects of student life, recognising the importance of holistic development.
Code Camp: Nurturing Future Innovators
The world is becoming increasingly digital, and at Prince of Peace, we are committed to preparing our students for the future. Code Camp is designed to introduce students to the world of coding and programming. Through hands-on activities and projects, participants will develop valuable skills in problem-solving, creativity, and logical thinking.
Lunchtime STEM Challenges: Fueling Curiosity Every Day
During lunch breaks, students will have the opportunity to engage in stimulating STEM challenges. These hands-on activities are designed to spark curiosity, encouraging students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a fun and interactive manner.
Global Academic Challenge: Connecting Minds Across Borders
This year, we are excited to offer the opportunity once again to Years 4 and 6 students to participate in the Global Academic Challenge, fostering connections and friendly competition on a global scale. It provides students with an opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge in various subjects, building bridges between diverse educational communities.
Australian Maths Challenge: Rising to the National Stage
In addition to our international engagements, we are gearing up for the Australian Maths Challenge, where students from Years 3-6 will have the chance to demonstrate their mathematical prowess on the national stage. This competition aligns with our commitment to excellence and academic achievement.
We encourage parents to discuss these opportunities with their children and help them explore their interests and passions. Our commitment to providing a well-rounded education extends beyond the classroom, and we believe that these extracurricular programs will contribute significantly to the growth and development of our students.

Living in Community for 40 years
As we celebrate the beginning of a new year of learning, growing, and serving at Prince of Peace, we welcome new and existing students, staff, and families to our community. This year is even more special as we celebrate Prince of Peace turning 40! 40 years ago, a vision was formed to begin a Lutheran Primary School in Everton Park which has seen the expansion to the Middle and Senior Campus at Everton Hills in July 2009. We recognise the courage and commitment in the establishment of this school of past leaders, staff, parents, and students. The mission of the community at its foundation was to nurture the God-given potential of each student to enrich the community. This remains the same mission today in 2024. We all become bearers of the Prince of Peace story and custodians of the traditions which bring life and strength to our College community. Above all, we give thanks to God for blessing of our school in so many ways in each passing year.
In our opening Worship where we installed new staff for 2024, we welcomed a foundation teacher, Hanne O’Brien who shared with us the beginning years of Prince of Peace. Hanne also shared her story with staff as we started our professional learning week. Hanne spoke of the passion for seeing each of the children in her care being loved and cared for. Although, we may have not had the richness of facilities in the beginning years to what we have grown to today, Hanne’s stories remind us of the privilege that we have to nurture each child’s life that we have in our care.
As we grow in forming new relationships with each other at the start of the new year it is a time to give thanks to God for bringing all the students, staff, and families to Prince of Peace; who have been called to serve in developing the God-given potential of each other in this community.

As we transition in a new year that bring new beginnings, hope, light and change, we remind each other to focus on what could go right. When we start from a positive and see the hope filled future we have, we recognise each day that we have much to be grateful for.

Uniform Changes
New White Formal Shirt
A new white formal shirt has been added to the Middle & Senior Campus UNIFORM FORMAL Option B (predominantly worn by boys). The current blue formal shirt being worn by Year 7-12 students will now slowly phase out and be replaced by the new white formal shirt over the next 5 years. Current families will have the option of wearing the blue shirts until December 2028. Please view our College Uniform Policy here »
This means:
- All MSC students can wear either blue or white shirts until the end of 2028.
- The white shirts will not be compulsory until January 2029.
By allowing this generous phase-in timeframe, current students can keep wearing their current blue shirts for as long as possible, including handing them down to siblings.
Transition process: As we run out of a size in the blue formal shirts, the white shirts will take their place on the shelves in both the Campus Uniform Store (located on the Junior Campus) and The School Locker’s North Lakes Super Store. We believe this transition will start happening during 2024 and will take approx. 12 months for all new blue shirts to be sold.
Blue shirts purchased on our Facebook Second Hand Uniform Buy & Sell Pages can be worn until January 2029.
In summary:
- Current families do not need to purchase the white formal shirt until 2029 as MSC students will be able to wear either the blue shirt or the white shirt until December 2028.
- From 2029, all students will be required to wear the white formal uniform with the grey pants or grey shorts. Blue shirts will no longer be permitted.
- The white shirt has been tailored so it does not need to be tucked into the shorts/pants.
- Stock will start appearing in both stores as the blue stock sells out.
Changes to Hat From 2025
Our current Senior Formal Hat (worn by Years 10-12 students) will become our new Middle & Senior Campus Formal Hat from 2025 and will be worn from Years 7-12. This hat will be slowly introduced to Middle School students over the coming years and will not be compulsory until all current students reach Year 10. It will be compulsory from 2027. For our current families, this means:
Please note: The new MSC Formal Hat can not be worn with the current sports uniform. Students can wear their old Navy Broad Brim hat with the sports uniform, or the sports bucket hat.
The Four Rs
Welcome to 2024 on the Middle and Senior Campus! We are off to a great start with our Year 7 students transitioning into Middle School and our Year 12 Seniors taking over as the student leaders who will “Be the Light” for us all this year. Our teachers are planned and prepared for excellent learning and teaching to take place, using the consistent language of the 4Rs of PoP College – Respect, Responsibility, Relationships, Restoration.
These four Rs are the foundation of our expectations of all students when they are learning in class, socialising around campus and representing our College. Ask your young person about how they intend to follow and demonstrate the 4Rs this year – what is their goal and how will they know they are being successful?
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23)
The Resilience Project
The Resilience Project (TRP) is the Wellbeing program we have invested in as a College (from Kindy through to Year 12), to have a common, consistent language of wellbeing and emotional literacy. The program is explicitly taught and practised using strategies to develop gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness in our young people and strengthen mental health and improve overall wellbeing. TRP program will be taught by Pastoral Care teachers in Pastoral Care class time o
n the Middle and Senior campus, supported by Year Level Coordinators. All teachers are encouraged to include moments of gratitude, empathy, or mindfulness into their classes with great resources supplied. As parents and carers, you also have access to this program through the Parent & Carer Hub.
TRP defines resilience as “a culmination of many skills that allow us to overcome adversity and achieve successes in our lives” and through the program, we are emboldened to learn and apply these skills to develop resilience, so we will be able to bounce back more quickly from difficult life events. In a recent post, Father Richard Rohr defines resilience as “a secular word for what religion was trying to say with the word faith” (Rohr, 2024). Chaplain Reilly so wisely tells us to ‘guard our hearts’ as this is the Christian way to practise unwavering faith in Jesus, develop self-acceptance, and show love for others in our daily lives. In this way, our wellbeing can thrive when we live in community together with the common goal of improving our collective resilience and faith.

Parking — A Message from Moreton Bay Council
The City of Moreton Bay regulates parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, shared paths, dividing strips or nature strips. Please note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels on the footpath/nature strip and two wheels on the road is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Council is legally obliged to enforce these regulations, and our Proactive School Safety Patrol Program contributes to this enforcement.
During Proactive School Safety Patrols, enforcement of unlawful parking is applied by obtaining photographic evidence and issuing a penalty infringement notice.
Council prefers that vehicle drivers are educated.

Welcome back, school community! I hope everyone had a rejuvenating holiday break and are now energized to dive into an exciting year of Physical Education and Sport.
This term promises a thrilling lineup, focusing on the exploration and development of fundamental movement skills for our Prep – Year 2 students. From running and jumping to throwing and catching, we’ll be honing these essential skills to lay the groundwork for a year filled with active and enjoyable physical activities.
For those students in Year 3 – Year 6 we are exploring Netball, the court awaits! With a blend of drills and practice matches, we aim to elevate our skills and teamwork, fostering a love for this dynamic and strategic sport.
We have thrilling plans for endurance training, particularly for our Cross Country enthusiasts. Get ready to lace up your running shoes as we hit the trails and work on building stamina, resilience, and a strong sense of teamwork.

NISSA Swimming Week 4 — Friday 16th February
NISSA Gala Day 1 Week 5 — Friday 23rd February
Kindy – Year 2 Fun Run Week 8 — Friday 15th March
NISSA Gala Day 2 Week 9 — Friday 22nd March
Year 3 – Year 12 Cross Country — (TBC) Week 10, Tuesday 26th March

Welcome to Middle and Senior Sport in 2024!
Just a friendly reminder that all sporting information for the Middle and Senior School can be found on SEQTA in the notices section. It is really important that this is checked regularly as new opportunities and information are consistently uploaded and updated.
NISSA Sporting Competition – Playing Shirts and Dresses
Our NISSA (Northern Independent Schools Sporting Association) competition starts in Week 4 of Term 1. Students in Yrs 7-10 have been busy over the past 2 weeks participating in trials and training in preparation for the competition’s commencement.
We are very excited to see the students in their new playing shirts this season. Once the competition begins in Week 4, students are able to wear these shirts to school for the day.
We understand that some students are still waiting on their shirts to come into stock. This is ok. We have a few spare that we can loan to students if required.
Our Netball girl players will be receiving their dresses for the season this week. They are to keep these dresses for the duration of the season before returning them in Week 5 of Term 2. Girls are encouraged to wear either black or navy blue bike pants underneath their dress. College bike pants are available at The School Locker North Lakes and our College Uniform Shop located on the Junior Campus.
NISSA Training during the playing season
Once the season begins in Week 4, students will be training on the following days;
Years 7 and 8 training will be during Thursday PC time.
Years 9 and 10 training will be during Wednesday PC time.
Students are to wear their normal HPE uniform on these days.
NISSA Swimming Carnival
The NISSA competition is expanding this year to include 2 major carnivals as well as a Senior Gala Day specifically for our Yr 11 and 12s. This expansion will provide more opportunities for our students to participate in competitive environments in a variety of different settings.
The first major carnival will be the Middle and Senior School NISSA Swimming Carnival, which is being held on Friday 16 February at Genesis Christian College from 4-6pm. Students will be notified this week if they have made the team. The results from last year’s swimming carnival have been reviewed to assist in forming this squad.
If you were absent from the swimming carnival last year (or are a Yr 7 student who did not compete in the event) and are a swimmer, please let Miss Collman know that you are interested in nominating for this carnival.
Sharks High Performance Academy
Congratulations to Evelyn Valencia (Yr 10) who has been selected to be a part of the Sharks High Performance Volleyball Academy this year. Well done Ev!

Welcome to all of our Music families for 2024.
Now is the time to sign up as we start the new year with Private Tuition in Voice, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Woodwind, Brass and Strings. If you want to start lessons in 2024, you will find the relevant forms on the MyPoP Parent Portal of the School Website, on the College Communications & Parent Resources page under Senior Campus Information. You could also collect a form from the Middle & Senior Campus Reception or from Ms Brady in M1, or download them here:
Rehearsals are starting now for Ensembles and you should find appointments in SEQTA both for these and for private tuition. Ensemble Rehearsals for 2024 will be as per the schedule below. If in doubt contact Ms Brady.
Please remember how important it is for the team that everyone is at all rehearsals. The music is not the same without you! Being on time and having all of your music and gear is an important part of the whole experience and develops disciplines and skills, which are very useful in all aspect of life.
Date Saver
Soloists on Show Soiree is on Thursday 14 March. Start practicing your solo pieces and watch out for the nomination forms in the next POPCORN.
